Walking the dog...Armstrong Atlantic University & Arboretum
My first impression of the Armstrong Atlantic University campus was that it was custom made for commuters plain and practical. No classic collegiate atmosphere and no need for it.
Was I ever wrong! I judged this book by its modest Abercorn cover. What a gem lies behind the facade. The campus itself covers 250 acres with over 100 species of trees and 200 species of shrubs and other woody plants. The plants are indigenous to this area and most are labeled. The University’s website (www.armstrong.edu) has 3 virtual tours you can take before or after going to the campus. Everything you want to know about the plantings is indexed on the website, including bloom times for plants. Whether you want to increase your botany knowledge, walk with someone or walk the dog, this is perfect. Smell is what drives dogs (more than food and sex); I can only imagine what a delight it is for a dog to walk at AASU.
You can dispose of dog doo in the many trashcans. There are benches for resting, trees supply good shading all over the campus and there are plenty of water fountains. They even have their own police department so be sure to pick up after your dog!
I walk there in off hours, parking across the street to avoid parking issues. Although the campus is laid out pretty simply, you might want to go armed with a campus map. You can get one at the website.
