LEG LENGTH LIFTS

Definition: When one leg is
shorter than a her (defined as over 1/2 inch), the entire gait can be
affected. Over time there are a variety of ways this will manifest in
dysfunction. Examples include hip pain, back pain, foot pain, etc.
There are actual leg length differences and functional differences. Each
requires a different way of addressing the discrepancy, sometimes even
placing a lift in the longer leg.
If the lift required is more than 3/8 inch, it should be on the outside
of the shoe and an allowance at the forefoot for a rocker is needed.
Internal lifts more than that height kick the heel out of the shoe and
place the foot at an unnatural angle when compared with the other foot.
Benefits: As with shoe size
measurements, most of us have a little bit of difference in the length
of our legs. When there are other extremity or back problems, this is
one area to investigate. Internal lifts are very inexpensive and will
sometimes make a world of difference.
