Walking my dog in the cool of the morning, I am witness to each day’s sunrise.
And, in southeast Georgia, it can be the only civilized time of day to
be out—at least for over 6 months of the year!
Every few weeks, I like to take a longer walk in a different place.
The dog and I get more exercise, I get to learn more about this region
and he gets his favorite thing: New Smells! I have several criteria,
however, for where we go: 1) the area needs to be protected from the
sun, 2) the pathway must be clearly marked so I don’t get lost! and 3)
the whole trip, including the walk, cannot take more than 4 hours (travel
included).
With this in mind, here is a spot that has everything I like and allows
dogs on the leash:
Ft. McAllister State Historic Park, Richmond Hill: Located on
the Ogeechee River, there are several trails here as well as a large
picnic area under canopies of Live Oak, White Oak, Red Oak and other
native habitat. Raccoon, white tail deer, cottontail rabbits and gray
fox are close enough to enjoy seeing them from the trail. The trails
are wide and well kept.
Take I-95 to exit 90 and follow the signs. It takes about 15 minutes
from the exit to the park entrance. It costs $2 to park.
What to take and when to go on a long walk: Early morning hours
are best. To be safe, take a light backpack with a travel water bowl
for the dog, 2 bottles of water, clean up materials for the dog, a small
umbrella and cell phone.
